Covid – 19 has undoubtedly affected us all in a range of different ways – whether it’s testing your social distancing skills, your ability to stay in touch with friends whilst remaining apart, or testing your patience when it comes to all of this toilet paper nonsense. One effect I think we can all agree on is that finding things to do becomes a lot more of a challenge when you can’t leave your house.
To cure your boredom, here are the top 5 creative things you can do to make the most of your time at home.
- Write a novel, blog, script etc.
Write literally anything that makes you happy! Maybe you already have an idea for a great book or maybe you’ve always wanted to give writing a go. What better time than right now?
One of my friends has talked about a novel idea of his for years and in the past week I have finally seen him start it! He is 3 chapters in so far and I am excited to see and read the final product. Being stuck inside home is also a great way to flex those creative muscles and see what things you can be inspired by that might usually go unnoticed.
- Experiment with food.
Have you ever seen those videos where people have really weird or odd food combinations that they eat? Maybe there’s a recipe you’ve been eager to make from scratch? Have you ever tried them? Or maybe there’s a few food combos you have floating around your head that you would be curious to make and try?
One of my friends decided to get a little experimental in the kitchen one day and discovered her new love of cheese toasties with soup followed by a serving of cold vanilla custard. I’m not kidding, this is all she has been eating while stuck in the house!
Maybe it’s time to pull out the contents of your cupboard and see what you could create. Who knows, maybe you’ve got some masterchef skills waiting to come alive.
- Create Tik Tok Videos.
This is definitely a social media platform that you can easily get addicted to – I know first hand – so be careful! Some of the content being posted on this app proves to be a lot of fun whether it’s comedy with your friends or the next dance trend everyone is learning. But one things is for sure – the possibilities are endless.
One of my friends has made it her goal to become ‘Tik Tok famous’ whilst in lockdown. I’ve got to admit she is doing well with 12,000 views on her first video. Let’s see if she can keep it up.
- Declutter your room.
I don’t know about you but the longer I sit in my house, the more aware I have become of all the items I have collected over the years. Perhaps this whole staying at home situation could prove productive?
My friend decided it was time she pulled out all of her Adventure time merchandise she had accumulated over the years and decide what she was going to keep or give away to good will. I was surprised by the amount she had: 3 caps, 2 beanies, 3 backpacks, a Bmo tin, lots of pens, stickers, nail stick-on art, even a blow up of Finn the Human’s sword. She ended up keeping 2 caps, a beanie and a backpack. She even made a Tik Tok of her struggle trying to pick which items to keep (yes, this is the same friend who is on her way to Tik Tok stardom).
- Rewatch early seasons of your favourite TV Shows.
Perhaps this seems an obvious one but you may be surprised what new things you might find when revisiting some of those treasured series you love. Two of my friends have definitely been spending a lot of their alone time on Netflix and Stan rewatching some classics like Arrested Development, The Office, and Kath and Kim.

There are many other great, creative ways you can find to stimulate your brain through this time, however, the most important thing to remember is to keep positive, get up every morning with a smile and stay safe.
