Like most people I talk to in these current times, I find maintaining good mental health in spite of COVID-19 can be quite difficult. All forms of media bombard us with information about the coronavirus: Virus statistics, panic buying, border shutdowns etc.

Taking in all this information at one time can often result in a feeling of helplessness and anxiety which will only aggravate the isolation we can so easily feel. In times like these we need to be intentional about maintaining good mental wellbeing.  Here are a few tips that I have found helpful for maintaining my mental and physical wellbeing in the last couple weeks.

  1. Stay Connected. Staying connected is important for our own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others. A simple phone call or text to a friend just to check in on them may be more valuable than you will ever know. Be the first one to reach out.
  2. Be kind to people. Sometimes the simplest gesture can make a person’s day. Like letting someone go ahead of you in the cashier line when they have only one or two items. Or checking-in on someone who may be elderly and unable to easily get out of their home.
  3. Get some outdoor time. Sunshine is good for us. We may not be able to go to our local café or big public areas but that doesn’t mean we have to stay in the house. Last week a walk at West Head was a great way for my wife and I to enjoy nature and the outdoors, and gain some perspective in all that is happening around us.

I am 69 years old and have been through many ups and downs in my life. Many years ago I had a operation that required a long period of recovery and I can remember thinking the pain would never end, but eventually I was free of pain, fully recovered and able to enjoy each day as they come.

It is just the same for COVID-19. This too shall pass.
